Greening Municipalities: Advancing Sustainability through Green Buildings
Lecture by Thomas Mueller, Urban Planner, President of the Canada Green Building Council

McGill University, School of Architecture
Macdonald-Harrington Building, Room G-10
815 Sherbrooke Street West, Montreal
Lecture 7:00 pm (free)
Cocktail 5:30 pm ($25 for non-members)
Municipalities play a key role in advancing sustainability and green buildings at the local level. They own and operate a significant building portfolio and control land development practices through their official community plans. Many municipalities have taken steps to green their building projects and work with the private sector to adopt green building practices. The Greater Vancouver Regional District, the City of Vancouver and other BC municipalities are leaders when it comes to sustainability in Canada. This presentation will focus on the process by which they were able to make permanent changes in the way that they build their own buildings, how they engaged staff and industry to go green, how they educated professionals and put policies and programs in place to advance green buildings in their jurisdictions.

A Safe and Sustainable World: The Promise of Ecological Design by Island Press
Over the past several decades, the emerging field of ecological design has lead to a new synthesis between architecture, energy and living systems. Buildings have been created to support ecological elements for aesthetic purposes as well as to purify air, manage hydrological cycles, grow foods, treat wastes, and integrate buildings with external landscapes and create new economic elements. Dr. John Todd and Nancy Jack Todd will describe their design work with bioshelters, living technologies for waste treatment and water recycling, environmental restoration in urban environments, buildings and communities with ecological elements, and finally with the emergence of integrated systems for food production within architectural settings. The promise of ecological design is the potential for a dramatic reduction in the negative human footprint on the environment leading to a more safe and sustainable world.
Visit Ocean Arks International for more information about the work of Dr. John Todd and Nancy Jack Todd.
