The City of Calgary has set a new precedent for energy and environmental stewardship in Alberta with the design and development of Cardel Place. This accomplishment was recognized with a special ceremony at the Mayor’s Environment Expo.

Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier and Guy Boutilier, provincial Minister of Environment, unveiled a plaque recognizing The City of Calgary for having achieved a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-NC) Gold rating from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). USGBC is America’s foremost coalition of builders promoting environmental stewardship that boasts a membership of over 4,000 organizations worldwide.

“The LEED program is at the forefront of environmental stewardship so I am pleased to know that The City has received international acclaim for Nose Creek Recreation & Library Facility,” said Mayor Bronconnier. “This is a first for Alberta and a first for Calgary; I congratulate the project team on a job well done.”

LEED is an international tool used to gauge the environmental performance of buildings in five areas, including sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. It is the first such designation for the Province of Alberta and The City of Calgary.

Championed by the Corporate Properties & Buildings and Recreation business units with assistance from Infrastructure, Cardel Place, located at 11950 Country Village Link NE, incorporated a number of innovations to qualify for the LEED-NC Gold rating. They included environmentally efficient site, building and road designs as well as a storm water retention pond among others.  In all, the building consumes 30% less energy than expected by the Canadian Model National Energy Code for building and considerably more than that for similar building types.

According to the USGBC, this LEED-NC Gold rating recognizes Cardel Place as “a pioneering example of sustainable design”, demonstrating The City’s leadership in transforming Calgary’s building industry and marketplace. Calgary is the first Canadian municipality to mandate that new City facilities attain a minimum LEED Silver rating.
